Turf Club goes online

The Tumut Turf Club has launched its online presence with a new website at www.tumutraces.com.au While the finishing touches are still to be applied, the site is now up for the world to see. Turf Club president Tim O'Malley paid tribute to the efforts of Bonnie Hyatt and Rebecca McNamara in driving the project, as well as website designer, Free Range Websites. With information on race meetings, sponsors, a photo gallery (still to be completed) and local accommodation, the site is geared towards racegoers. Mr O'Malley said the club was looking forward to another great season of racing, beginning with Derby Day on October 31st.

Tumut's Exchange upgrade to ADSL2+ Under Optel Broadband partnership. Tumut will be among the townships to benefit from High speed internet following the release of the Federal Governments broadband rollout plan. The Service will be swithed on the September 2007.

School of Rock. Tumut high School was rocked with th wild screeching of guitars last thursday when the annual Battle of the Bands took Place, pitting the regions wannabe rock stars, against each other in their quest for glory. Congratulations to the band 'Killing in the Name' who one the night.

The Real Estate market in the major urban areas of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong has been marking time for a number of years. there are signs however that a turnaround is not far away. Interest rates have been put on hold for the time being, vacancy rates are falling and as a consequence, investors might soon be tempted back into the market. Adelong is preparing to be over-run by antique dealers and enthusiasts for the 2007 Gold Antique Fair and Auction held in just 2 weeks. Jayson Sullivan, President of the Adelong Progress Association said applications from prospective stall-holders were pouring in and that the fair looks like it will be a huge success this year.

Over 100 people braved the wet weather on Tuesday night to attend the emergency town meeting on the future of the Tumut Hospital, But if those who turned out were hoping to hear definite answers about the status of the Hostpita, they would have been disappointed, as speaker after speaker outlined the same problems and obstacles, which have plagued the project since its inception, and gave little cause for hope that it will go ahead in the near future.

Community says NO to Pub Sale, Adelongs Royal Hotel expected to now go onto the open market. A proposal which would have seen the Adelong progress Assiociation buy the Royal Hotel on behalf of the adelong community was unanimously voted down at a town meeting on wednesday night, effectively putting an end to the group's intentions to restore and run the building as a pub or hotel.

International Artist Victor Cebergs has carved a new sculpture for the Batlow Community to replace a previous piece of art completed in 2004, which was destroyed by a wayward crane operator. The new piece is based on an apple peelerand was carved out of timber. The sculpture is located in the Wirilla Park on Pioneer St.

The voices of Dawn Kitchener and geoff Turnbull have been beaming into homes acrossthe region for over three years, bringing weather, news, and classic tunes throughout the day.

Merry Christmas, It has been a tumultuous couple of weeks for the Tumut Shire and in particular it's firefighters. They have bravely battled blazes in pine plantation to the north and east of Tumut, and in Bushland to the south-west of the Township. A 52 metre pedestrian bridge across the Goobarragandra River at the Thomas Boyd Trackhead was offically opened by Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly on Friday. Built by the Australian Army 21st Construction Regiment earlier this year, the bridge forms part of the Hume and Howell Walking Track

Tumut Sporting Shooters Association of Australia will host their big two day event, with all abilities being catered for. Over $1200 of Prizes and Trophies to be won on the day.

Next weekend's inaugural Adelong Lifestyle Expo will be bigger than "Ben Hur". this 2 day event to be held at the Adelong Showground on Saturday and Sunday, will attract thousands of people. With the NSW Rural Fire service putting on demostrations and Tae Kwon Do, Belly Dancing, and a varity of other activities will take place over the weekend

Tumut Aerodome was visited by one of the country's bravest and most adventurous light aeroplane pilots of all time, Jon Johanson, after flying solo across the Tasman. the RV3 will be the latest addition to the ever growing fleet of aircraft at Tumut Airport, who fly under the banner Tumut Aero Club.

Ken Hall from Sydney, whose family has a passion for History, gold mining and photography arrived in Adelong last week with three photos which depecting the adelong gold fields. The photos are to star in a major upcoming exhibition at the Adelong Alive Museum.

Life Membership was bestowed on two long serving and hard working members of the Tumut and District Netball Association at the recent end of the season presentations, with Liz Crampton and Wendy Christian acknowledged for their years of tireless support and dedication to netball at all levels.

Canberra link bonus to Brindabella Rd reconstruction work. Work on a further 4.2kms of the Brindabella Rd between Tumut and Canberra
forms part of a plan to spend $2.3 million on some key state forrest roads in the tumut region this financial year.

The Tumut District Womens Support and Housing Centre recently celebrated two years in its Banksia Cresent residence, the Banksia
Community Centre. A New storage and play shed at the centre was also recently completed, thanks to the assistance of a number of local
service clubs and businesses.

Tumut Minor Leagues Senior teams enjoyed victories over the paddock on Saturday. The under 12's scored a hard fought 10 - 6 win.
The all Conquering under 13s hammered the Junior Dragons 34 - 8 and the under 14s came away with a 38 - 0 Victory. Well done boys!

Gymnasts ready for State Titles, 3 Tumut Gymnasts are heading to Sydney to compete in two seperate high level competitions. We wish
Heather Wortes, Shannon Ferguson and Gemma Robinson all the best in the competition, in both individual events and their team events.

Naidoc Week in the Tumut Shire. Organisers of the local NAIDOC Week activities have declared them the most sucessful ever held in the
Tumut district. the event is held annually in the first week of July.

Minister for Primary Industries Ian MacDonald and Press secretary Carina Bates visited the Tumut Visy Pulp and Paper mill this week,
to hold discussions with senior Visy management on the planning process for stage 2 which will double production, and the pressures
that will be placed on the infrastructure including State forrest roads.

$400m Visy Mill upgrade on track. 350 jobs created, completion by 2009, Visy Mill Manager Lex Kingma gave an overview of Visy's
expansion plans to Tumut Shire Council on Tuesday, but made it clear those plans may change.

The restoration program for the Wetlands took another major leap towards completion this month. A number of activities have now
been completed which are aimed at improving the health, cultural and recreational values of the Riverglade Wetlands in Tumut.

Retirement Village plans unveiled. Sydney delevoper Joe Blazevevic has lodged with Tumut Council a development application for an
upmarket retirement village on the snowy mountains highway.This new retirement facitiliy will be welcomed by local seniors, as reports
recently have shown that the present facilities are inadequate.
